Tim Curry, ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Icon, Dies at 80

British actor Tim Curry, whose unforgettable performance as Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show made him a cult-film icon, has died at the age of 80.

Curry died at his home in Los Angeles, according to his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz. His death was reported on Wednesday, with no cause of death immediately disclosed.

The actor’s death brings to an end a career spanning almost six decades across film, television, theatre and music.

Curry rose to international fame after portraying the flamboyant Dr Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Show. The movie initially struggled at the box office but went on to become one of the world’s most enduring cult films, with Curry’s performance at the centre of its lasting appeal.

His career extended far beyond Rocky Horror. Curry became known for his versatility and his ability to portray eccentric, sinister and often memorable characters.

He played the sinister hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, appeared in Clue and Legend, and portrayed the terrifying Pennywise the clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

Curry was also a respected stage performer. His Broadway work earned him three Tony Award nominations, including for Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Spamalot. He also received an Emmy for his voice work in the animated series Peter Pan & the Pirates.

His distinctive voice also made him a sought-after voice actor, with credits across animated productions and video games.

Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 that affected his mobility and left him using a wheelchair. Despite the setback, he continued working, particularly in voice acting, and remained connected with his enormous fan base.

In 2025, Curry appeared at events marking the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, reflecting on the extraordinary legacy of the film and his career-defining character. He also published his memoir, Vagabond, that year.

His final years were marked by continued recognition from fans and fellow performers, many of whom regarded him as one of the most distinctive and versatile character actors of his generation.
