President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to travel to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday to perform Umrah, the lesser Islamic pilgrimage, and pray for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress, according to the Presidency.

The trip was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. He said the visit would provide Tinubu with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and devotion as he seeks Allah’s guidance and blessings for Nigeria and its people.

While in Makkah, Tinubu is expected to undertake the religious rites associated with Umrah. Unlike Hajj, which takes place during a specific period in the Islamic calendar, Umrah can be performed at different times of the year.

Before leaving Abuja, the President is also scheduled to commission equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The Presidency has not provided details of the equipment or its operational deployment.

Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing the pilgrimage.

Presidency dismisses medical-treatment speculation

The announcement comes amid speculation about the purpose of the President’s foreign trip. On Thursday, the President’s Special Adviser on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, dismissed suggestions that Tinubu was travelling to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment.

In a response to comments by activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, Olusegun said the trip was for Umrah and prayers for Nigeria. He added that Tinubu would also commit his 2027 re-election bid to God.

The aide described the pilgrimage as a longstanding religious practice, pointing out that Tinubu travelled to Makkah for Umrah twice in 2022, before the All Progressives Congress presidential primary and the 2023 general election.

The Presidency has maintained that the visit is religious in nature. Its announcement did not identify any additional official engagements in Saudi Arabia.

Prayers amid national challenges

Tinubu’s stated prayer intentions come as Nigeria continues to grapple with security concerns, economic pressures and public demands for improved governance. The Presidency’s statement, however, did not link the pilgrimage to any specific policy announcement or new government measures.

The visit is expected to conclude next week, after which the President will return to his official duties in Nigeria.
