President Bola Tinubu has received the United Nations’ proposed 2027 budget from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, in a development the envoy described as a historic first for the country.

Ibrahim, who chairs the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee responsible for administrative and budgetary matters, presented the seven-volume proposal to the President on Sunday.

The proposal covers the organisation’s regular operations and peacekeeping activities. It remains subject to scrutiny and negotiations by UN member states before a final budget is approved.

The presentation comes as Nigeria occupies a key position in the UN’s budget deliberations, with Ibrahim presiding over the committee responsible for examining spending proposals, administrative requirements and the financing of the organisation’s programmes.

The UN’s proposed 2027 programme budget was presented by Secretary-General António Guterres to the Fifth Committee in October. The committee is expected to examine the estimates, consider recommendations and negotiate adjustments before the General Assembly takes a final decision.

Ibrahim described the presentation to Tinubu as a significant milestone for Nigeria, although he did not specify the direct financial or other benefits the country would receive from the proposed budget.

The proposal’s presentation does not mean the budget has been approved. Its spending figures and allocations may change during the review process, which involves negotiations among UN member states.

The development nevertheless places a spotlight on Nigeria’s role in the UN’s budget process, as member states weigh the organisation’s operational needs against calls for greater efficiency, accountability and responsible spending.
