President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity, fairness, and sportsmanship among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.

In a statement released on Thursday, the President described the primaries as a defining moment for the ruling party, noting that the exercise marks the APC’s fourth election cycle since its formation.

Tinubu said the primaries, which begin with House of Representatives contests and will culminate in the presidential primary on May 25, 2026, go beyond selecting candidates, describing them as a test of the party’s unity, resilience, and internal democracy.

The President encouraged party leaders and stakeholders to adopt consensus where possible, noting that the approach could help reduce internal conflicts and strengthen cohesion within the party. However, he stressed that where consensus fails, members must approach the primaries with discipline and mutual respect.

He warned against divisive politics, urging aspirants and supporters to avoid rancour and uphold democratic values throughout the process.

“In every contest, there will be winners and losers. Victors must remain humble, while those who do not succeed should demonstrate sportsmanship and continue to support the party,” he stated.

Tinubu also called on party leaders, including governors, to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in the conduct of the primaries.

The President further highlighted the importance of inclusion, urging party members to give greater consideration to women and youth in the selection process, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s political and demographic future.
