U.S. Approves Visas for Iran Squad to Play World Cup Matches in America
Iran’s national football team has been granted visas to enter the United States, clearing a major logistical and diplomatic hurdle just days before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026, according to U.S. officials.
A White House official confirmed that visas have been issued for players, coaches, and essential members of the delegation, allowing the team to travel for its group-stage matches scheduled in Los Angeles, Seattle, and other U.S. venues.
The decision comes after weeks of uncertainty, during which Iran’s participation was clouded by tensions between Tehran and Washington and concerns over entry permissions for players and staff.
While the squad has now received approval, reports indicate that some technical and administrative staff are still awaiting clearance, raising questions about full team logistics ahead of the tournament.
Iran has qualified for the World Cup finals and is expected to base its camp in Mexico, travelling into the United States for matches due to the geopolitical sensitivity surrounding its participation.
The development is being viewed as a rare moment of sports diplomacy amid ongoing political tensions, with both sides allowing the tournament schedule to proceed without disruption.
Iran is scheduled to begin its World Cup campaign in mid-June, facing New Zealand in its opening group match.
