Veteran Yoruba Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Dies After Cancer Battle
Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died after battling cancer.
His death was announced on Sunday, August 23, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during a live session, according to multiple Nigerian media reports. The news was subsequently confirmed by other figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry, including Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood awards.
The veteran actor’s death comes only days after his family publicly disclosed the seriousness of his health condition and appealed for help as he battled stage-four cancer.
Earlier this month, reports of his death had circulated on social media, but members of his family dismissed them as false. His daughter had urged the public to stop spreading unverified reports while the actor was receiving treatment.
However, on Sunday, the family confirmed the heartbreaking development, bringing an end to days of uncertainty surrounding the actor’s condition.
Ogogo was one of the most recognisable faces of Yoruba-language Nollywood, building a career that spanned several decades as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter.
He was particularly known for his commanding presence in Yoruba films, where he frequently portrayed powerful, authoritative and sometimes intimidating characters.
His career began in the early 1980s, and he later became associated with the Odunfa caucus, one of the influential groups that helped shape the Yoruba film industry.
Over the years, he appeared in numerous productions and earned a reputation as one of the industry’s enduring veterans.
His death has already triggered an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues and entertainment figures across Nigeria.
The actor’s passing is another major loss for an older generation of Yoruba film practitioners whose work helped establish the foundations of contemporary Nollywood.
As tributes continue to pour in, details surrounding funeral arrangements and further statements from the family are expected to emerge.
Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ was 66.
