WE CAME TO SERVE, WE LEAVE A STRONGER BAR

Today, as I hand over the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association to a new National Executive Committee, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a deep sense of fulfilment.

Two years ago, I accepted the responsibility of leading our great Association with a clear understanding that the office of President is temporary, but the Nigerian Bar Association is permanent. We are only custodians of an institution that belongs to all of us and to generations of lawyers yet unborn.

These two years brought their share of challenges, difficult decisions and defining moments. Through it all, one principle remained constant: the Bar must always come first.

I am grateful to every Nigerian lawyer who supported, encouraged, questioned, criticised and held us accountable. I am particularly grateful to the National Executive Committee, Past Presidents, my aides, colleagues, friends and everyone who contributed, often quietly and behind the scenes, to the work of our administration.

I leave with the satisfaction that we gave this assignment our very best and that we have strengthened the institutional and financial foundation of the Association, including building over ₦4 billion in investments for the future of the Bar. But beyond figures and achievements, I am most grateful for the privilege of service, for the friendships forged, the lessons learnt, the battles fought and the opportunity to contribute one chapter to the continuing story of the Nigerian Bar Association.

To our new President, Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, SAN, and the new National Executive Committee, I offer my warmest congratulations and my very best wishes. The Bar is now in your hands. Protect its independence. Lead with courage. Listen to its members. Defend the rule of law. Build upon what is good and take the Association to even greater heights.

I urge every member of the Bar to give the new leadership the support and constructive engagement it needs to succeed. The NBA cannot be built by one President or one administration. The Bar belongs to all of us, and its future is our collective responsibility.

I came into office as a servant of the Bar, and I leave it as an even more grateful servant of the Bar.

May history record that we served with courage, acted with integrity and left the Nigerian Bar Association stronger than we found it.

The office may change hands. The service continues. The Bar endures.

May God continue to bless the Nigerian Bar Association, its members and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
