19-Year-Old Arrested After Virginia State University Shooting Leaves Five Wounded

Police in Virginia have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded, including one victim who remains in critical condition.

The suspect, identified as Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, was arrested Saturday afternoon after officers found him hiding inside a closet at Seward Hall, a university residence hall, more than 12 hours after the shooting. Authorities said Harris is not a student at Virginia State University.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. near the university’s Quad Annexes and residence halls. Police responding to reports of gunfire found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims, whose ages range from 17 to 23, were taken to area hospitals. One 20-year-old victim, who is a Virginia State University student, has since been released. Another victim remains in critical condition, while the other injured people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the shooting, Virginia State University was placed under lockdown as officers searched the campus. The lockdown was later lifted after authorities determined there was no longer an immediate threat to the university community.

Chesterfield County police said they obtained eight felony warrants against Harris;  four for malicious wounding and four for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail, while investigators continue working to establish what led to the shooting.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive. Police are also investigating whether other people were involved, after the university initially reported that multiple suspects were being sought. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation.

The shooting occurred just days before the start of Virginia State University’s fall semester, adding to concerns among students and families returning to campus. University officials said an increased police presence would remain in place as the investigation continues.
