500 Drummers, Non-Drummers to Beat Drums for Peace in Osun Ahead of Governorship Poll
As the August 15 governorship election in Osun State approaches, a unique initiative is being organised to promote harmony and unity, with plans for 500 drummers and non-drummers to come together and drum for peace.
The event comes at a time of heightened political tension in the state, with various stakeholders raising concerns over violence and killings by suspected political thugs. The Osun State Police Command has already convened a stakeholders’ peace meeting involving the military, INEC, and political parties to address the rising violence.
The peace drumming initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure a violence-free electoral process. Earlier, chairmen of 12 political parties in Osun State unveiled plans for the state’s first Peace Summit, aimed at fostering dialogue among political stakeholders. Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, speaking on behalf of the Forum of Osun State Political Party Chairmen, stated that the main purpose is “to map out ways of having a peaceful electoral process before, during and after the election and reach a conclusive agreement”.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the governorship election for August 15, 2026, with Governor Ademola Adeleke contesting for a second term against Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress and other candidates.
The Osun Development Association has also called on all political parties, their candidates, and supporters to conduct themselves with utmost restraint and civility. Dr Segun Aina, Chairman of the association, emphasised that “the future of Osun State depends not only on who emerges victorious at the polls but also on how the election is conducted”.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has reaffirmed the commitment of the traditional institution to promoting peace and discouraging electoral violence. During a meeting with the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, the monarch stated that “we will continue to advocate peaceful coexistence in our communities and encourage our youths not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of violence”.
The peace drumming event is expected to draw participants from across the state, symbolising the collective desire for a peaceful and credible election. The initiative aligns with calls from various quarters for issue-based campaigns and the rejection of hate speech and violence.
Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has warned against the destruction of opponents’ campaign materials and urged political actors to notify security agencies before holding rallies to enable adequate security arrangements.
The drumming for peace initiative underscores the growing determination among citizens and stakeholders to ensure that the Osun governorship election strengthens democracy rather than weakens it.
