A 55-year-old motorist has escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos, leaving the vehicle severely damaged.

The accident involved a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT and a train travelling towards Agege.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed the incident in a statement, saying its operatives and security personnel swiftly intervened to rescue the driver and remove the wrecked vehicle from the railway track.

Despite the severity of the collision, no injuries or casualties were reported at the scene.

LASTMA said the impact left the Honda car virtually written off, but the driver remarkably escaped without any reported injury.

The agency said the coordinated response of its operatives and security personnel enabled the immediate removal of the damaged vehicle, allowing the train to resume its journey towards Agege.

However, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis following the incident, with vehicular movement along the affected corridor severely disrupted.

The wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their prompt response and coordinated handling of the incident.

He praised their vigilance, professionalism and cooperation in managing an accident that could have resulted in serious injuries or loss of life.

Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration and swift emergency response in mitigating the consequences of transportation accidents, particularly those involving railway operations and adjoining road infrastructure.

He also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.

The LASTMA general manager warned drivers against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion, stressing that disregard for railway safety regulations could result in devastating consequences.

The agency consequently appealed to motorists and other road users to remain vigilant and comply strictly with established traffic and railway safety regulations.

It emphasised that responsible driving, sound judgment and adherence to safety instructions were essential to preventing avoidable accidents and protecting human lives.
