HIGH COURT RESTRAINS SOLE ADMINISTRATOR FROM RESUMING DUTIES IN RIVERS STATE

A State High Court in Port Harcourt has granted an order preventing the Sole Administrator from resuming his duties in Rivers State pending the determination of the substantive suit. The suit, filed by Hon. Edison Ogaranya, former Chief of Staff to the immediate past governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Similaye Fubara, challenges the presidential pronouncement of a state of emergency in Rivers State, arguing that it is unconstitutional.

Justice Danagogo, in his wisdom, granted the prayers of Ogaranya and urged all parties to maintain the status quo. This development is a significant setback for the Sole Administrator, who was appointed to take charge of the affairs of the state following the declaration of a state of emergency.

Ogaranya’s suit is seen as a test of the constitutionality of the presidential pronouncement, and the court’s decision is being closely watched by legal experts and political analysts. The case is expected to have far-reaching implications for the governance of Rivers State and the limits of presidential power.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has expressed optimism that the country is on the path to overcoming its persistent security challenges, attributing this to ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima made the remarks on Tuesday in Gusau during a grand reception marking the defection of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, and his supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on behalf of the President, the Vice President said the administration remains committed to securing lives and property across the country, adding that peace and stability are gradually within reach.

He noted that Zamfara, one of the states most affected by insecurity, would benefit from closer collaboration with the federal government and other APC-led states following the governor’s defection.

Shettima also downplayed the strength of opposition parties in the state, suggesting that political unity among key actors in Zamfara would limit their influence going forward.

Also speaking at the event, Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, described the governor’s move as strategic, noting that cooperation between state and federal authorities is essential to tackling security challenges.

He emphasized that insecurity is not unique to Zamfara or Nigeria but can be addressed through collective action and coordinated governance.

Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, described the defection as a historic moment, declaring that the move effectively eliminates opposition presence in the state.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, welcomed Lawal into the APC, calling the development a “win-win” for Zamfara and the ruling party.

The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, said the governor’s entry into the party reflects confidence in the administration’s performance, particularly in infrastructure development within the state.

During the ceremony, Lawal was formally presented with the APC flag and broom, symbolizing his official entry into the party.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to former Zamfara leaders, including Bello Matawalle and Abdulazeez Yari, for their support.

He pledged to work collaboratively with party stakeholders and deliver development to the state, while committing to the success of the APC in upcoming elections.

Both Matawalle and Yari, in separate remarks, declared their support for Lawal and President Tinubu, with Matawalle dismissing speculation about a 2027 governorship bid and endorsing Lawal for continuity.
