President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family of former Henry Nwosu, the legendary Nigerian midfielder who passed away on Saturday at the age of 62.

In a statement issued by the presidency, the president joined Nigeria’s football community in mourning the former Super Eagles star, describing him as an exceptionally gifted footballer whose brilliance on the pitch left a lasting legacy in Nigerian football.

Tinubu recalled Nwosu’s remarkable talent and early rise in the national team, noting that he was only 17 years old when he featured in the then Nigeria national football team squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.

The president also acknowledged Nwosu’s more than a decade of service to Nigeria’s national team and his participation in subsequent editions of the continental tournament, including the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, and 1988 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to Tinubu, Nigerians will always remember the late midfielder for the pride and joy he brought to the country through his outstanding performances and his role in inspiring a generation of footballers.

The president also prayed for the peaceful repose of Nwosu’s soul and asked that his family be granted strength and comfort during this difficult time.
