CTN ‘Idan’ Rough & Tough – Edition 6

Tuesday, June 30, 2026

It’s not every day that a single announcement changes the entire landscape of a league.

But on Tuesday, that is exactly what happened.

The National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko, dropped a bombshell that will reshape the Nigeria Premier Football League forever. Champions of the 2026/27 season will receive ₦1 billion — up from ₦200 million .

Runners-up? ₦800 million. Third place? ₦700 million.

Even teams at the bottom of the table will get something.

This is not a small change. This is a paradigm shift.

Welcome to the new NPFL. And welcome to Edition 6 of CTN ‘Idan’ Rough & Tough.

Let’s get into it.

THE IDAN OF THE WEEK: The National Sports Commission

The Performance: Dropped a ₦1 billion prize money announcement that shook Nigerian football to its core.

The Result: Every NPFL club now has a financial reason to aim for the top. Every player has a reason to stay in the league. Every fan has a reason to watch.

The Announcement: Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, confirmed the landmark prize structure during a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation officials in Abuja .

But that was not all.

The NSC also announced a minimum monthly salary of ₦2 million for NPFL players — a staggering rise from the previous minimum of ₦150,000 .

Let that sink in.

A player in the NPFL now earns more in one month than they used to earn in an entire year.

The Reaction: FCT Football Association Chairman Adam Mohammed praised the move, calling it “a bold statement of intent for domestic football” .

But he also issued a warning: “A massive incentive is welcome, but it should not be mistaken for a fully functional football system. If the league is not commercially viable, properly televised, safe for players, and trusted by fans, the prize money alone will not transform it” .

The Idan Verdict: The NSC gets the Idan this week. This is the most significant financial intervention in Nigerian football history. It is a statement that the government sees football as a serious industry, not just a pastime.

But Adam Mohammed is right. The money alone is not enough. Infrastructure must improve. TV deals must be secured. Stadiums must be safe. Academies must be functional.

If all of that happens alongside this prize money? Nigerian football will become the most attractive league in Africa.

This is Idan. The real kind.

ROUGH & TOUGH MOMENT OF THE WEEK: The ₦1 Billion Reality Check

Let us pause for a moment and appreciate how far Nigerian football has come.

A few years ago, NPFL players were earning peanuts. Clubs were struggling to pay salaries. The league was barely on television. Fans had to rely on sketchy online streams to watch matches.

Today?

· Champions win ₦1 billion
· Runners-up win ₦800 million
· Third place wins ₦700 million
· Minimum player salary is ₦2 million per month
· Plans to return the NPFL to mainstream television are at an advanced stage

This is not the same league we grew up with.

But here is the Rough & Tough reality: the money must be matched by professionalism.

Adam Mohammed put it best: “Our ambition should not be limited to offering the biggest prize money in Africa. We should focus on building the continent’s most-watched, most-trusted, and most-talent-producing league. That is the real trophy” .

He also called on corporate Nigeria to step up: “Banks, telecommunications firms, airlines, energy companies, media organisations, and manufacturers all have roles to play in football’s value chain” .

Rough & Tough? Yes. But also exciting. Because for the first time in a long time, the future of Nigerian football looks bright.

WHERE EUROPEAN LEAGUES FEAR TO TREAD

You know what you will never see in the English Premier League?

A government agency stepping in to increase prize money by 500% in one season.

The EPL is driven by private equity, broadcast deals, and billionaire owners. It is a commercial machine. The government stays out of it.

In Nigeria? The National Sports Commission just changed the financial destiny of every NPFL club.

That is the difference between the two worlds.

In Europe, football is a business. In Nigeria, football is a passion — and sometimes, the government has to step in to make the business work.

Is that a good thing? It depends on your perspective.

But one thing is certain: without this intervention, the NPFL would continue to lose its best players to Europe and Asia.

With this intervention? Players might actually stay.

That is Rough & Tough. That is Nigerian football.

FRANK ONYEKA: FROM CHAMPIONSHIP TO PREMIER LEAGUE

While the NPFL was making headlines with its prize money announcement, a Super Eagle was securing his own bag.

Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to Coventry City after helping the club win the Sky Bet Championship and secure a Premier League return for the first time in 25 years .

The 28-year-old midfielder initially joined Coventry on loan from Brentford in January. He made 14 appearances, scored one crucial goal in a 3-2 victory over Derby County in April, and played a key role in their promotion campaign .

Now, the move is permanent. Onyeka told club media: “When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry get promoted to the Premier League. I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League” .

The Idan Verdict: Frank Onyeka, you are an Idan. From Brentford’s first Premier League signing to helping Coventry return to the top flight, you have shown that Nigerian midfielders can compete at the highest level.

KANO PILLARS: COACHING CHANGE AND BUA DENIAL

In Kano, the off-season drama is heating up.

First, the coaching news: Salisu Yusuf is set to be appointed as Technical Adviser of Kano Pillars ahead of the 2026/27 season .

Yusuf previously managed the Sai Masu Gida during the 2021/22 season. The 2018 CHAN silver-winning coach ended his deal with Coton Sport of Benin Republic by mutual agreement at the end of last season and is now returning to Kano .

Then, the transfer rumour that wasn’t.

BUA Group, the industrial conglomerate owned by billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu, has dismissed reports that it submitted a bid to acquire a 70% stake in Kano Pillars .

The speculation had generated considerable excitement among supporters and football stakeholders, with growing calls for increased private-sector investment in Nigerian football clubs .

But BUA’s statement was clear: no proposal was made. The reports were “false and inaccurate” .

The Idan Verdict: Salisu Yusuf returns to Kano Pillars. That is a solid appointment. But the BUA denial is a reminder: private investment in Nigerian football is still a dream, not yet a reality.

NPFL ORIENTATION WORKSHOP: NEW CLUBS GET SCHOOLED

On Friday, June 26, the NPFL held an induction workshop for the four newly promoted clubs: Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Doma United, and Ranchers Bees .

The workshop, held in Abuja, focused on club licensing and the operational requirements of the elite league .

NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Prince Davidson Owumi, said: “The programme was organised purposely for orientation, induction and as well get acquainted with how club licensing works to forestall future challenges” .

He also warned: “We will ensure strict adherence to the rules of the league and sanctions will be imposed on the erring teams most especially in the area of security breaches, infrastructures, administration and others” .

Sporting Lagos Chairman Godwin Enakhena described the workshop as “highly beneficial” .

The NPFL is also expected to hold a meeting with all 20 clubs on Tuesday as preparations intensify for the commencement of the 2026/27 season in August .

The Idan Verdict: The NPFL is professionalising. Slowly, but surely. New clubs are being educated. Rules are being enforced. Standards are rising.

TRANSFER ROUNDUP: NIGERIANS ON THE MOVE

A quick roundup of Nigerian players making moves abroad:

Chidera Michael Okoh has sealed a move to Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv from Greek side Asteras Aktor . The 23-year-old striker will wear the iconic No. 9 shirt during the 2026/27 campaign and joins fellow Nigerians Samuel Kalu, Chimezie Williams, Ifenna Dorgu and Bryan Hein at the club .

Zadok Yohanna — who we featured last week — officially completed his move to Brighton & Hove Albion for £21.5 million. The 18-year-old Nigerian right winger from Ikon Allah Football Academy signed a five-year deal . Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler said: “He’s dynamic, has pace and likes to take players on. His attributes and ability will be a real addition to our attacking options” .

The Idan Verdict: Nigerian talent is in demand. From the NPFL to the NNL to academies, the world is watching.

THE PARTING SHOT

This week, Nigerian football took a giant leap forward.

₦1 billion for champions. ₦2 million minimum salary. A professional induction workshop for new clubs. A Super Eagle securing a Premier League return. Nigerian players moving to clubs across Europe.

The signs are clear: Nigerian football is on the rise.

But the work is not done. Infrastructure must improve. Television deals must be secured. Stadiums must be safe. Private investment must follow.

If we get all of that right, the NPFL will become the most attractive league in Africa.

And the world will have no choice but to pay attention.

Go and watch Nigerian football. The future is bright.
