The National Assembly has approved the N68.4 trillion 2026 budget presented to it, marking a significant increase from the initial proposal.

The report of the Senate Committee on Appropriation was laid before lawmakers on Tuesday during plenary by its Chairman, Senator Solomon Olamilekan, leading to the passage of the budget.

The approved figure represents an increase from the N58.1 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill earlier presented to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in December 2025.

Lawmakers said the over N9 trillion increase was driven by the inclusion of outstanding 2025 legacy obligations, additional funding for the health sector, provisions for the Ministry of Finance Incorporated MOFI, feasibility studies for the Calabar Maiduguri corridor and the Maiduguri Sokoto superhighway, as well as allocations to the judiciary, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, among others.

Following the passage, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives for what he described as a thorough and diligent consideration of the budget.
