The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has directed all students to vacate its hostels immediately following escalating security tensions in Jos and surrounding areas.

The directive was issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, amid what the institution described as “near chaotic scenarios” in areas close to the campus, raising concerns over student safety.

In a move to support the evacuation process, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang approved the provision of transportation for affected students. The vehicles, according to authorities, have been authorised to operate even during curfew hours to ensure a smooth and safe relocation.

A statement issued by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations), Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the Registrar, outlined a phased evacuation plan.

Students whose parents or guardians reside within Jos and its environs are scheduled to leave on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m., while those whose families live outside Jos will be evacuated on Thursday.

Despite the directive, the university management assured the academic community that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to safeguard the institution’s facilities, including hostels and other critical infrastructure.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in Plateau State, with authorities taking precautionary steps to prevent any potential threat to lives and property.
