Bayelsa Set to Host 10km International Road Race, Eyes Global Sports Recognition
The Bayelsa State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning the state as a hub for sports and youth development as it prepares to host a 10km international road race on Saturday, April 4, 2026.

Governor Douye Diri, speaking through the Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, said the event will begin at Opolo Roundabout and end at Peace Park in Yenagoa, with over 2,000 athletes from across Africa and beyond expected to participate.

A delegation from World Athletics, led by Nadeem Khan, is already in the state to oversee the competition.
Speaking at a press conference in Yenagoa, the governor described the race as a major step toward promoting healthy living, boosting the local economy, and preparing Bayelsa to host the 2028 National Sports Festival.
“This event is not just about competition but about community, healthy living, and the future of sports in Bayelsa,” he said, inviting residents, visitors, and the media to participate.
Commissioner for Information, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, noted that sports development remains a priority of the state government, highlighting recent investments and improved security to ensure a successful event.
Also speaking, Solomon Ogba commended the initiative, describing it as a historic move to empower youths through sports.
Mr. Khan added that although Nigeria has strong marathon talent, none qualified for the elite category, which requires ranking among the world’s top 300 athletes. He noted that the race would place Bayelsa on the global athletics calendar.
Prize money for the race includes $5,000 for the winner, $3,000 for second place, and $2,000 for third, while fourth and fifth place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Organiser Yetunde Olopade said the event is structured into three categories, with medical and technical teams stationed along the route to ensure participants’ safety.
