NBA superstar LeBron James has reportedly informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to continue his career with another team, bringing an end to an eight-year partnership that delivered an NBA championship and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in basketball history. The stunning development, confirmed by multiple media outlets citing James’ longtime agent Rich Paul, is expected to dominate the NBA offseason as free agency gets underway.

According to reports, Rich Paul, the CEO of Klutch Sports, informed ESPN that James has officially notified the Lakers of his decision to move on. While the 41-year-old has made it clear that he intends to play a record-breaking 24th NBA season, he has not yet decided which franchise he will join.

James joined the Lakers in 2018 after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers, immediately transforming the franchise into a title contender. His biggest achievement in Los Angeles came in 2020 when he led the Lakers to the NBA championship inside the league’s COVID-19 “bubble,” earning the fourth NBA title of his illustrious career. During his eight seasons with the Lakers, James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and added several milestones to an already unmatched résumé.

Even in his 23rd NBA season, James remained one of the league’s elite performers. During the 2025–26 campaign, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds over 60 games, proving he can still perform at an All-Star level despite becoming the oldest active player in the league. He also extended numerous NBA records, including most career points, most games played and most All-Star selections.

Although no destination has been confirmed, speculation has intensified around the Golden State Warriors. Reports suggest the Warriors are preparing an aggressive pursuit after Draymond Green declined his player option, a move widely viewed as creating additional financial flexibility. A move to Golden State would see James team up with longtime rival Stephen Curry, creating one of the most star-studded partnerships in NBA history.

Other potential destinations mentioned by NBA insiders include a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where James won the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2016, as well as the Miami Heat, where he captured two consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013. However, league sources emphasize that no decision has been made and that discussions with interested teams are only beginning.

James’ departure also signals the beginning of a new era for the Lakers. With Luka Dončić expected to become the centerpiece of the franchise’s future, Los Angeles is likely to reshape its roster around the Slovenian superstar while seeking additional talent through trades and free agency. Reports indicate the Lakers are expected to pursue a long-term solution at center as they prepare for life after James.

The Lakers have not issued an official statement regarding the reports. However, league insiders say the organization had hoped James would finish his career in Los Angeles after becoming one of the defining players in franchise history. His exit marks the end of one of the NBA’s most successful player-franchise partnerships of the modern era.

As NBA free agency officially opens, the basketball world will now focus on where the four-time NBA champion chooses to continue his legendary career. Whether he joins another title contender or returns to one of his former teams, James’ next decision is expected to have a major impact on the balance of power across the league heading into the 2026–27 season.
