England booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after producing a courageous 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in a breathtaking Round of 16 clash at the iconic Estadio Azteca, a match already being hailed by many as one of the tournament’s finest.

Playing in front of more than 80,000 passionate Mexican supporters and battling both the altitude of Mexico City and a relentless home side, England displayed remarkable resilience to overcome adversity and keep their World Cup dream alive.

The Three Lions seized control late in the first half thanks to an inspired performance from Jude Bellingham. The midfielder stunned the home crowd by scoring twice in just 98 seconds, first powering home a header before calmly finishing a move created by captain Harry Kane to give England a commanding 2-0 lead.

Mexico refused to surrender. Julián Quiñones reduced the deficit just before halftime, sending the packed Azteca into celebration and setting up an electrifying second half.

England’s task became even more difficult in the 54th minute when defender Jarell Quansah received a red card following a VAR review for a dangerous challenge, forcing Thomas Tuchel’s side to play the remainder of the contest with ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, England struck again. Harry Kane confidently converted a penalty after Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel brought him down, restoring England’s two-goal cushion and recording his sixth goal of the tournament. The strike also moved Kane level with German legend Gerd Müller on the all-time World Cup scoring list with 14 career goals.

Mexico continued to attack relentlessly, and Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty after Kane conceded a foul inside the box, reducing the score to 3-2. The hosts launched wave after wave of attacks during the closing stages and lengthy stoppage time, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced several crucial saves while England’s defence stood firm under immense pressure.

The victory was especially significant as it marked Mexico’s first-ever World Cup defeat at the historic Estadio Azteca, ending a remarkable unbeaten record at the famous venue. It also secured England a quarter-final showdown with Norway, who earlier stunned Brazil with a surprise victory.

Speaking after the dramatic contest, England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his players’ determination, describing the performance as one built on “mentality and heart” after overcoming the hostile atmosphere, altitude and a second-half red card. Captain Harry Kane admitted it had been “a crazy game” but said England simply found a way to win when it mattered most.

With breathtaking attacking football, controversial moments, dramatic penalties, a red card and an unforgettable finish, the encounter delivered everything football fans could hope for and has quickly earned its place among the standout matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
