ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Salary Delay, Allowances
Academic activities across Nigerian universities have been disrupted following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The union announced a total withdrawal of services over the non-payment of its members’ March 2026 salaries and the exclusion of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
In a statement signed by Jurbe Joseph Molwus, Chairperson and issued to members, ASUU directed lecturers nationwide to immediately suspend lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings.
“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of exams, and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” the statement read.
The directive, which takes effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026, aligns with resolutions of the union’s National Executive Council and congress decisions.
ASUU attributed the delay in salary payments to issues linked to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, noting that university bursaries had reportedly completed their part of the payment process.
The union expressed concern that its continued patience was being taken for granted, warning that the situation could undermine industrial harmony within the university system.
To ensure compliance, ASUU said it has activated a strike monitoring team to oversee adherence across its branches.
