Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that a gunman responsible for a deadly shooting in the capital, Kyiv, has been killed by police, bringing an end to a violent incident that left at least five people dead.

According to a statement from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the attacker opened fire in a public area, triggering panic among residents and a swift response from security forces. Law enforcement officials moved quickly to contain the situation, eventually neutralizing the suspect after an exchange of gunfire.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene, where several victims were pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released full details about the identities of those killed, but confirmed that multiple others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Officials described the incident as a “tragic act of violence” and launched a full investigation into the motive behind the attack. Early reports suggest the shooter may have acted alone, though investigators are still working to determine whether there were any accomplices or broader connections.

The shooting comes amid ongoing security concerns in Kyiv, a city that has remained on high alert due to the broader conflict affecting the country. While authorities have not indicated any direct link between the shooting and the ongoing war, the incident has heightened fears among residents already living under tense conditions.

President Zelenskyy extended condolences to the families of the victims and praised the rapid response of law enforcement officers, stating that their actions likely prevented further loss of life.

Security measures in parts of the city have since been tightened, with increased patrols and surveillance as officials work to reassure the public and prevent further incidents.
