Authorities in Shreveport, Louisiana, have identified the gunman responsible for a devastating mass shooting that left eight children dead, marking the deadliest mass killing in the United States in more than two years.

Police named the suspect as Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old local resident, who allegedly carried out a series of shootings across multiple homes in what officials described as a domestic-related attack.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, with gunfire reported across at least three to four locations in the Cedar Grove area of the city. The victims, all children aged between one and 14, were found at different scenes, with some believed to be related to the suspect.

In total, at least 10 people were shot, including two adult women who survived with injuries. One child was also injured while attempting to escape.

Following the attacks, the suspect reportedly fled the scene after carjacking a vehicle, triggering a police chase that ended in neighbouring Bossier Parish. Law enforcement officers fatally shot the suspect during the pursuit.

Investigators believe the attacker acted alone, though the motive remains unclear. Early indications suggest the shooting may be linked to a domestic dispute, a pattern seen in many U.S. mass shootings where victims are known to the perpetrator.

Local officials have described the incident as one of the darkest days in the city’s history. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux and Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed shock at the scale of the violence, while authorities announced plans for community support services, including counselling and vigils for the victims.

The Louisiana State Police have launched a full investigation into the incident, particularly due to the multiple crime scenes and the officer-involved shooting that ended the suspect’s life.

The tragedy has once again reignited national conversations around gun violence, domestic instability, and child safety in the United States.
