Authorities in Austria have issued a public alert after a jar of baby food was found to contain rat poison, raising serious safety concerns.
Police in the eastern region of Burgenland said the contaminated product  a carrot and potato purée produced by HiPP  was reported by a customer. Fortunately, the affected infant did not consume the food.
Investigators believe the jar had been deliberately tampered with and warned that at least one more contaminated product could still be in circulation.
The alert followed information shared by German authorities, with similar cases reported in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
In response, HiPP initiated a recall of its entire range of jarred purées sold in Spar outlets across Austria, warning that consumption could be potentially life-threatening.
The company clarified that the issue did not originate from its production process, stating that all products left its facilities in proper condition.
“This is related to a criminal act currently under investigation,” the company said, noting that only isolated cases of tampering had been identified.
As a precaution, Spar has also withdrawn the affected products from shelves in other countries.
Authorities have advised consumers to watch for signs of tampering, including damaged or loose lids, missing safety seals, unusual odours, or suspicious markings on the packaging.
Parents whose children may have consumed the product have been urged to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as unusual weakness or other health concerns appear.
The incident comes amid broader concerns over food safety in Europe. Earlier this year, global food companies Nestlé and Danone issued recalls of infant formula products across multiple countries due to contamination fears linked to a toxin known as cereulide.
Health authorities say investigations into the tampering incident are ongoing, as efforts continue to identify those responsible and prevent further risk to consumers.
