Suspected kidnappers have attacked a commercial bus belonging to GUO Transport along the Ore–Benin Expressway, killing the driver and abducting several passengers in a fresh assault that highlights the worsening insecurity on Nigeria’s highways.

The attack reportedly occurred along a notorious stretch of the highway linking the South-West and South-South regions in Nigeria, an area long known for frequent kidnappings and armed ambushes.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports indicate that the gunmen ambushed the east-bound vehicle, opened fire on the driver—who died on the spot—and forced the passengers into nearby forest areas.

Local sources said the victims were taken into surrounding bush paths, a tactic commonly used by kidnapping gangs operating along the corridor.

Although security agencies have yet to issue an official statement, residents and transport operators expressed concern over the increasing vulnerability of travellers on the route.

The Ore–Benin Expressway has over the years become a hotspot for armed robbery and abductions, with analysts attributing the trend to poor surveillance, limited patrol presence, and the strategic nature of the road connecting major regions of the country.

The latest incident adds to growing public outcry over persistent attacks on highways, with renewed calls for enhanced security deployment, surveillance systems, and coordinated rescue operations to protect commuters.
