Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has officially assumed office after presenting his letters of credence to Secretary-General António Guterres.

The ceremony, held on Monday at the United Nations Headquarters, formally accredits Ibrahim as Nigeria’s chief envoy to the global body. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed the development, noting that the process completes the requirements for full diplomatic recognition.

By presenting his credentials, Ibrahim is now authorised to represent Nigeria in all official engagements at the United Nations, including high-level discussions and multilateral negotiations on global priorities such as peace, security, and development.

Letters of credence are formal documents issued by a country’s head of state, empowering an ambassador to act on behalf of their nation. Without this step, an envoy cannot fully function in their diplomatic role.

Ibrahim was appointed in March 2026 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a broader reshuffle that saw 65 ambassadors deployed to various missions worldwide, comprising both career diplomats and political nominees.

Other prominent appointees include Femi Fani-Kayode (Germany), Isaac Adewole (Canada), and Olufemi Pedro (Australia).

Before his diplomatic assignment, Ibrahim served as senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, having been elected in 2023. His nomination followed the Senate’s confirmation of ambassadorial nominees in December 2025.

As Permanent Representative, he will lead Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement at the United Nations, interfacing with member states and advancing the country’s interests across key international platforms.

Ebienfa underscored the significance of the development, stating that the presentation of credentials signals the formal start of Ibrahim’s duties at the United Nations.
