The Nigerian Navy has deployed a fleet of warships and helicopters for its 2026 maritime security exercise, reinforcing efforts to combat piracy and other threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

The operation, conducted under Exercise Obangame Express 2026, features the deployment of 10 naval ships and two helicopters, alongside maritime surveillance assets and special operations units. The exercise was officially flagged off at a naval facility in Rivers State and is scheduled to run for several days.

According to naval authorities, the exercise is designed to strengthen regional maritime security cooperation and enhance operational readiness in tackling both local and transnational crimes at sea.

Participating personnel will engage in a range of simulated operations, including anti-piracy drills, crude oil theft prevention, illegal fishing enforcement, and trafficking interdiction. Additional scenarios include search-and-rescue missions, boarding exercises, and “hot pursuit” simulations aimed at improving rapid-response capabilities.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, emphasized that the annual multinational exercise has become a key platform for boosting interoperability among navies in West and Central Africa. He noted that improved maritime security in recent years has contributed to safer shipping routes and increased investor confidence in Nigeria’s blue economy.

Exercise Obangame Express, supported by international partners, continues to play a strategic role in addressing evolving threats across the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
