Global football governing body FIFA is reportedly facing a potential broadcast revenue setback ahead of its upcoming tournaments, after a low-value bid from India and delays in securing a major deal in China raised concerns over media rights income.

According to multiple reports, Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries has submitted an offer of approximately $20 million for World Cup broadcasting rights in India far below expectations for one of football’s fastest-growing markets. The bid is said to fall significantly short of previous deals, highlighting shifting market dynamics and possibly reduced competition among broadcasters in the region.

India, with its vast population and rapidly expanding digital audience, has been viewed as a key growth market for FIFA. However, industry analysts suggest that changing viewing habits, the rise of streaming platforms, and cautious spending by media companies may be impacting the valuation of sports rights.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround FIFA’s negotiations in China, another crucial market. No official announcement has been made regarding a broadcasting agreement, fueling speculation that talks are either stalled or yet to reach a favorable conclusion. China previously represented a major revenue stream for international sporting events, making the delay a potential concern for FIFA’s overall commercial strategy.

The combined situation in India and China; two of the world’s largest media markets, poses a challenge for FIFA as it seeks to maximize global reach and revenue ahead of future tournaments, including the expanded World Cup formats.

Despite the current hurdles, FIFA is expected to continue negotiations and explore alternative partnerships, including digital streaming platforms, to secure broader coverage and financial stability.
