Alex Zanardi, Racing Legend and Paralympic Champion, Dies at 59
The global sporting community is mourning the death of Italian auto racing legend and Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi, who has died at the age of 59.
Zanardi’s family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on May 1, though no immediate cause of death was disclosed.
A former Formula One driver and two-time CART champion, Zanardi became one of the most inspirational figures in modern sport after overcoming devastating injuries to achieve Paralympic glory.

Zanardi rose to prominence in the 1990s, competing in Formula One before finding major success in the American CART series, where he won back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998.
His life changed dramatically in 2001 when he was involved in a catastrophic crash during a race in Germany that resulted in the amputation of both legs.

Despite the severity of the accident; which nearly claimed his life, Zanardi made an extraordinary recovery and returned to competitive sport.
Reinventing himself as a hand cyclist, Zanardi went on to win four gold medals and two silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games.
He also claimed multiple world championship titles and competed in endurance events, including marathons and Ironman races, becoming a global symbol of resilience and determination.
His journey from near-fatal injury to elite athletic success earned him widespread admiration and transformed perceptions of disability in sport.
In 2020, Zanardi suffered another serious accident while competing in a handcycling relay event, sustaining severe head injuries that required prolonged medical treatment.
Although he continued to fight through years of recovery, his health remained fragile.
Tributes have poured in from across the world of motorsport and beyond, with leaders and athletes praising Zanardi’s courage, optimism, and enduring legacy.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described him as “an extraordinary man” who turned adversity into strength, while Formula One officials hailed him as a symbol of determination and inspiration.

Moments of silence have been observed at sporting events across Italy in his honour.
Zanardi’s life story marked by triumph, tragedy, and reinvention, leaves behind a legacy that transcends motorsport.
He is survived by his wife and son.
