President Tinubu Celebrates Nigeria’s Dominance at African Wrestling Championships
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships held in Alexandria, where the country secured a record 15th continental title in the women’s category.
In a statement issued by the State House, the President described the victory as a reflection of discipline, consistency, and national pride. He noted that Nigerian wrestlers have continued to assert their dominance across the African continent through impressive performances.
Team Nigeria delivered a strong showing, winning 8 gold and 2 silver medals in the women’s division across 10 events. Overall, the team finished with 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals across all categories—an achievement the President said highlights both individual excellence and depth within the squad.
Tinubu specifically praised standout athletes including Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Blessing Oborududu (correcting to Mercy Adekuoroye), commending their composure and technical brilliance. He also acknowledged Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for securing victory in the men’s freestyle category.
The President extended recognition to other contributors, including Ebierelayefa Andrew, Stephen Akintewe, Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli, emphasizing that the success was a collective effort.
According to Tinubu, the performance signals positive progress in Nigeria’s sports development, driven by improved structure, planning, and athlete preparation. He credited the efforts of the National Sports Commission leadership, including Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, as well as the Nigeria Wrestling Federation under Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for strengthening the sport’s foundation.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports as a tool for national unity, youth empowerment, and global representation, adding that such victories go beyond medals and reflect the country’s growing sporting potential.
President Tinubu urged the athletes to remain focused and continue striving for excellence as they prepare for future international competitions.
