A court in Austria has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack targeting a 2024 concert by Taylor Swift in Vienna.

The suspect, identified in local reports as Beran A., was convicted on multiple terrorism-related charges after prosecutors said he planned to attack fans attending Swift’s “Eras Tour” concerts at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium in August 2024. Authorities said the plot was foiled just days before the scheduled performances, leading to the cancellation of all three shows.

According to investigators, the suspect had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and allegedly communicated with extremist operatives online. Police discovered bomb-making materials and weapons-related evidence during a raid on his apartment on August 7, 2024, one day before the concerts were due to begin.

Prosecutors told the court the accused intended to use knives and homemade explosives to target concertgoers and people gathered outside the stadium. Austrian authorities said the planned attack could have resulted in mass casualties.

During the trial, the suspect reportedly admitted guilt and expressed remorse before sentencing. His lawyer argued that he was not an “ideological mastermind,” but the court still found him guilty on nearly all charges presented by prosecutors.

A second defendant, identified as Arda K., received a 12-year prison sentence for related terrorism offenses connected to separate extremist attack plans in the Middle East.

The failed plot shocked fans worldwide and forced the cancellation of Swift’s Vienna performances, which would have marked the singer’s first concerts in Austria. Nearly 200,000 fans were reportedly affected by the decision.
