Nigeria Eyes Global Best Practices as INEC Observes South Korea’s Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dispatched a high-level delegation to South Korea to observe ongoing local government elections, as part of Nigeria’s broader preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Led by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, the delegation is in Seoul under the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP), an initiative of South Korea’s National Election Commission (NEC) designed to expose global electoral stakeholders to the country’s voting processes and administrative systems.

According to INEC’s Daily Bulletin released on Saturday, the delegation includes National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.

 

The IEOP coincides with South Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections, scheduled from May 29 to June 5, 2026, drawing election management bodies, experts, and international observers from several countries.

 

The opening ceremony of the programme held in Seoul, where participants were briefed on South Korea’s electoral framework, innovations in election management, and mechanisms for ensuring transparency and credibility in the voting process.

 

As part of the observation exercise, the INEC team visited a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they observed early voting procedures and gained firsthand exposure to the operational structure of the country’s elections.

 

INEC said the visit is intended to deepen the commission’s understanding of emerging global trends in election administration, including voter engagement systems, logistics coordination, and the use of technology in ensuring credible outcomes.

 

South Korea is widely regarded as one of the world’s most efficient electoral democracies, with a reputation for high voter turnout, transparent processes, and strong institutional trust.

The commission noted that insights from the study tour would contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in the areas of capacity building, procedural reforms, and institutional learning.

 

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to improving electoral integrity and aligning Nigeria’s election management practices with global standards while adapting them to local realities.
