US-based Nigerian writer and academic, Prof. Okey Ndibe, was reportedly detained for several hours by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday.

According to local media reports, Ndibe; known for his outspoken criticism of Nigerian governments, was held shortly after landing in Nigeria, sparking renewed concerns over the treatment of journalists and freedom of expression in the country.

A report by Anambra-based media sources indicated that the journalist was taken aside for questioning by security operatives, a pattern that has reportedly occurred in past years during his visits to Nigeria. He was later released after hours of interrogation, with no official explanation immediately provided by authorities regarding the reason for his detention.

Ndibe, a professor and novelist based in the United States, has long been a vocal critic of governance and political leadership in Nigeria. Past incidents show that he has previously been detained and had his travel documents seized by security operatives, drawing condemnation from press freedom advocates and international observers.

As of press time, the DSS has not issued an official statement confirming or explaining the latest incident.

The development has already begun generating reactions online, with concerns raised about press freedom, accountability, and the recurring pattern of airport detentions involving critical voices.
