The Nigeria Union of Teachers has demanded the immediate rescue and release of teachers and learners abducted in Oyo State and other parts of the country, warning that it may embark on a nationwide strike if urgent action is not taken.

The demand was made during a solidarity rally organised by the union in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where teachers called on authorities to strengthen security around schools and protect education workers from rising attacks.

Speaking at the rally, Audu Amba described the abductions as a direct assault on Nigeria’s education system, stressing that attacks on teachers undermine the nation’s future.

“An attack on teachers is an attack on education,” Amba declared, urging both the federal and state governments to act swiftly to secure the safe return of the kidnapped victims and prevent further incidents.

The NUT president reiterated the union’s directive for primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to suspend academic activities in protest against the abduction, insisting that the safety of teachers and students must be guaranteed before normal school operations can resume.

He warned that the union would not hesitate to escalate its response if the abducted teachers and learners are not rescued promptly.

According to Amba, the union is closely monitoring developments and consulting with its affiliates nationwide, noting that a nationwide strike remains an option should government efforts fail to yield results.

The rally comes amid growing concerns over recurring attacks on schools and the safety of teachers and students across Nigeria, with education stakeholders calling for stronger measures to secure learning environments and end the threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements.
