Vice President Kashim Shettima has commended satellite internet provider Starlink for donating specialised communication equipment to the National Emergency Management Agency, describing the partnership as a major boost to Nigeria’s emergency and disaster response capabilities.

Speaking during a meeting with officials of NEMA and representatives of Starlink at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, Shettima said reliable communication remains critical during emergencies, particularly in disaster-prone and hard-to-reach communities.

According to the Vice President, the collaboration between NEMA and Spacex, Starlink’s parent company, will enhance coordination, improve response times and strengthen the country’s disaster management framework.

“Effective communication is vital during emergencies and disaster situations. Partnerships such as this will improve NEMA’s response capacity and coordination across the country,” Shettima said.

Earlier, NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar disclosed that Starlink donated high-speed satellite internet hardware and data plans to support emergency operations nationwide.

She said the donation includes 91 standard and mini Starlink communication units, which will be deployed to strategic locations across the country.

According to Umar, the equipment will help address communication challenges often encountered during emergencies in remote and underserved areas where conventional networks may be unavailable.

She added that about 50 disaster flashpoints nationwide will receive the communication facilities, while NEMA’s command-and-control centre will also be upgraded to strengthen emergency response operations.

Speaking on behalf of Starlink, Peter Kroetger praised Nigeria’s efforts in disaster preparedness and emergency management despite technological challenges.

He noted that NEMA has established structures capable of effectively deploying satellite-based communication systems during crises and humanitarian operations.

The latest partnership comes as Nigerian authorities continue to improve disaster preparedness ahead of seasonal flooding and other emergencies.

Officials believe the deployment of satellite internet technology will help emergency responders maintain communication links during disasters, enabling faster coordination, information sharing and rescue operations.

The Vice President assured Starlink that the donated equipment would be deployed efficiently to maximise its impact on disaster management efforts across the country.
