The Federal Government has released funds to settle five months of accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) owed to lecturers in federal universities across Nigeria, in a move aimed at improving the welfare of academic staff and stabilizing the university system.

According to government officials, vice-chancellors of federal universities have been directed to immediately disburse the funds and ensure that all outstanding payments due to eligible lecturers are cleared without delay.

The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance is a welfare package designed to support lecturers in carrying out teaching, research, and other academic responsibilities by helping to offset the costs of essential work tools and professional resources.

The payment of the arrears comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to address concerns raised by university-based unions over staff welfare, funding, and working conditions within the tertiary education sector.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that the settlement of outstanding allowances could help ease tensions between university authorities and academic staff while boosting morale among lecturers.

The government said the release of the funds reflects its commitment to strengthening higher education and ensuring that lecturers receive benefits due to them under existing agreements.

University administrators are now expected to commence the payment process immediately, with lecturers across federal institutions anticipating the disbursement of the long-awaited allowances in the coming days.

The latest intervention is part of broader efforts by the administration to improve industrial harmony in Nigeria’s public universities and enhance the quality of teaching and research nationwide.
