INEC Restores 22 Constituencies, Fixes June 16–25 for Party Primaries Ahead of 2027 Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) has restored 22 previously suspended state constituencies across Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi States and directed political parties to conduct fresh primaries between June 16 and June 25, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
INEC said the restoration followed court judgments compelling the Commission to reinstate the constituencies in line with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act, 2026.
In Benue State, the affected constituencies include Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev-Tiev), Makurdi III (South East), and Gboko III.
Delta State recorded six restored constituencies, including Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II, and Warri North II.
Jigawa State has Aujara Constituency restored, while Kogi State recorded the highest number with 10 constituencies, including Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa-Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba-Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalaogwa and Ogugu.
The Commission stated that the restored constituencies will now fully participate in the 2027 general elections and elect representatives into their respective State Houses of Assembly.
Political parties have been instructed to conduct primaries within the June 16–25 window and ensure compliance with the Electoral Act, with INEC monitoring all exercises.
The electoral body also directed parties to formally notify it ahead of primaries to enable proper supervision and adherence to electoral guidelines.
INEC explained that the special arrangement was necessary because the primaries in the restored constituencies fall outside the previously approved statewide timetable.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to credible and inclusive elections, stressing that the restoration of constituencies is part of its constitutional responsibility to ensure fair representation and participation in the democratic process.
With the development, voters in the affected areas many of whom had been without representation are now expected to participate fully in the legislative elections scheduled for 2027.
