Operation HADIN KAI has recorded a significant breakthrough in its counter-terrorism operations following the surrender of two high-profile Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commanders to troops in the Lake Chad region.

The surrender, which occurred on 8 June 2026, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna Sani.

The commanders, identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, are currently in military custody where they are undergoing profiling and debriefing procedures.

Preliminary intelligence assessments indicate that both men held strategic positions within the ISWAP hierarchy, operating along the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad Basin.

According to the statement, Operation HADIN KAI described the surrender as a major setback for the terrorist group, given the operational roles and experience of the individuals involved.

One of the surrendered commanders, Ismail Mohammed, was reportedly a close associate of senior ISWAP leader Baa Shuwa and possessed extensive knowledge of the group’s command structure and operational activities.

The second commander, Abu Umar, was known within the network as an explosives specialist responsible for the fabrication and maintenance of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) and other combat-support equipment used by the group.

Military sources also confirmed that another senior ISWAP figure, Mohammed Khalifa, a member of the group’s Shura Council, was neutralised during ongoing operations in the theatre.

Officials said the surrender of the two commanders reflects increasing pressure on insurgent groups operating in the Lake Chad region, as sustained military operations continue to degrade their capabilities and disrupt their command structure.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani stated that the development underscores growing desperation within terrorist ranks, adding that continuous offensives have denied insurgents safe havens and freedom of movement.

He reaffirmed that Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to maintaining pressure on terrorist elements and dismantling their operational networks in order to restore lasting peace and stability to affected communities in the North-East.
