Media personality has criticised gospel singer over her performance during the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor .

Freeze disclosed that he walked out of the memorial event after Chinwo took the stage, arguing that her performance transformed what should have been a solemn occasion into a concert-like atmosphere.

Ekubo, who died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40, was said by his family to have passed away after a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze questioned the choice of songs performed during the service, insisting that funeral gatherings should feature softer, reflective music aimed at comforting mourners.

According to him, traditional hymns would have been more appropriate for the occasion than energetic praise sessions.

“Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left,” he said.

He added, “Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have sung hymns. I would have been more moved if I had heard hymns.”

The broadcaster also expressed reservations about the involvement of multiple guest artistes leading worship sessions during the event, maintaining that memorial services should preserve a calm and reverent atmosphere.

His remarks have since sparked debate on social media, with some users agreeing that funeral services should maintain a more solemn tone, while others defended Mercy Chinwo’s style of worship, arguing that celebrations of faith and hope are also appropriate ways to honour the deceased.
