Suspect Arrested After Deadly Shooting at Delaware Hospital Leaves One Dead

A suspect has been taken into custody after a shooting inside Wilmington Hospital in Delaware left one person dead and another injured, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday inside Wilmington Hospital, part of the ChristianaCare health system. Police responded to reports of gunfire and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim later died, while the condition of the second victim has not been publicly disclosed.

Wilmington Police said a 23-year-old man was arrested in Philadelphia later Tuesday night following a multi-agency manhunt. Authorities tracked the suspect’s movements using investigative tools, including surveillance footage and license plate reader technology. Charges and extradition proceedings to Delaware are pending. Investigators have not yet released the suspect’s identity.

The shooting prompted an immediate lockdown of the hospital, with law enforcement officers securing the facility and evacuating staff and visitors. The lockdown was later lifted after police determined there was no ongoing threat within the hospital.

ChristianaCare temporarily diverted emergency department patients and said it was taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of patients, caregivers, and visitors. Hospital operations continued under heightened security measures as investigators examined the scene.

Officials have not released the identities of either victim, citing respect for their families. Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the relationship, if any, between those involved.

Wilmington Mayor John Carney condemned the violence, describing the incident as especially troubling because it occurred in a hospital dedicated to treating and saving lives.

The investigation remains ongoing.
