Tears Flow as Alex Ekubo Returns Home for Burial, Nollywood Stars Pay Final Respects

Emotions ran high in Arochukwu, Abia State, on Thursday as the body of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo arrived in his hometown ahead of his final burial rites, drawing family members, friends, fans, and prominent figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The late actor’s remains were received in a solemn convoy that made a brief stop at the palace of the Eze Arochukwu before proceeding to his family compound, where mourners gathered to pay their final respects.

Residents of the community joined Nollywood stars in a moving procession through the village, many dressed in customised T-shirts bearing the actor’s image and carrying photographs in honour of his memory.

Among celebrities present were actor IK Ogbonna, actress Ini Edo, filmmaker Omoni Oboli, and fashion entrepreneur Yomi Casual, all of whom travelled to Abia State to bid farewell to their colleague and friend.

The outpouring of grief reflected the impact Ekubo made during a career that spanned more than a decade in Nigeria’s film industry, where he earned admiration for his talent, charisma, and contributions to Nollywood.

Ekubo died last month at the age of 40 after a private battle with kidney cancer, according to family sources. His passing sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, prompting tributes from colleagues, fans, and public figures across the country.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, the actor featured in numerous successful films and television productions, earning several awards and nominations throughout his career.

Thursday’s burial ceremony marked the final chapter in a life celebrated both on and off the screen. As mourners filed past to honour him, many described him as a gifted entertainer whose legacy would continue to inspire aspiring actors and filmmakers.

He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and a host of loved ones.
