The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a nursery and primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who allegedly died after being assaulted by a parent for disciplining a pupil.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the incident was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.

According to the statement, the 30-year-old teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka was allegedly attacked by Abdullahi Ishaka and two women following a disciplinary action taken against a pupil.

Saliu said preliminary investigations revealed that the trio stormed the school and allegedly assaulted the teacher, leaving her with severe injuries.

She said Usman was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical attention.

“However, she succumbed to her injuries and died on June 25,” the police spokesperson said.

She added that officers from the Olamaboro Division visited both the school and the deceased’s residence as part of the investigation, while necessary documentation had been completed.

According to Saliu, arrangements are being made to move the body to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

She said the suspects fled before police officers arrived at the scene, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.

The police spokesperson stated that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon the arrest of the suspects.

She assured that the command would carry out a thorough and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s death.
