A devastating fire at a state-run orphanage on the outskirts of Algiers, the capital of Algeria, has killed at least 11 people and injured 19 others, prompting an outpouring of grief across the country and an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday at a child welfare facility in the Mohammadia district, east of Algiers. According to Algeria’s Civil Protection agency, emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the blaze and worked for hours to extinguish the fire while rescuing children and staff trapped inside the building.

Authorities said the provisional death toll stands at 11, while 19 people sustained injuries. Among the injured, 10 suffered burns of varying severity, two experienced breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation, and several others were treated for shock and minor injuries. Emergency responders also evacuated five children with disabilities from the facility to safety.

Officials have not yet released the identities or ages of the victims, although local media reported that children were among those who lost their lives. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators have launched a formal inquiry to determine how the blaze started and whether any safety failures contributed to the tragedy.

Television footage from the scene showed firefighters battling flames and heavy smoke while ambulances transported survivors to nearby hospitals. Parts of the orphanage were left badly damaged, with blackened walls and shattered windows highlighting the intensity of the fire.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy. He also wished those injured a swift recovery and praised firefighters and medical personnel for their rapid response.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited hospitals treating the injured and met with emergency officials overseeing the response. He pledged that authorities would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the disaster and ensure accountability if negligence is found.

The tragedy comes as Algeria faces an intense summer heatwave that has increased the risk of fires across the country. Civil Protection officials said firefighters have responded to more than 900 fires nationwide since July 8, stretching emergency resources as soaring temperatures continue to affect several regions. Authorities have not indicated whether the extreme weather played any role in the orphanage fire.

The deadly blaze has renewed attention on fire safety standards in facilities that care for vulnerable children. Advocacy groups and community leaders have called for comprehensive inspections of childcare institutions across the country to help prevent similar tragedies.

As investigators continue gathering evidence, the nation remains in mourning for the victims, while families await answers about one of the deadliest fires to strike a child welfare institution in Algeria in recent years.
