NESREA Probes Suspected Chemical Spill After Truck Crash on Kaduna–Abuja Expressway

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has launched an investigation into a suspected chemical spill following a truck accident along the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Assistant Director of Press, Mrs. Nwamaka Ejiofor, the agency said the accident left behind a white, foamy substance at the scene, prompting an immediate response from environmental authorities.

According to the statement, a team from NESREA’s Kaduna State Field Office, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Hena Emmanuel, visited the accident site to commence investigations into the incident.

During the visit, the team met with the Jere Police Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sani Zubairu, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander in the area, and the community leader to gather preliminary information.

NESREA said initial findings indicated that a heavy-duty truck was involved in the accident, resulting in the spillage of its contents.

The agency added that it collected information from security agencies, relevant officials and residents to support ongoing investigations.

To determine the nature of the substance and its possible environmental impact, NESREA said it collected samples of the foamy material, surrounding soil and water from a nearby stream for laboratory analysis.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the agency advised residents and road users to avoid contact with the white foamy substance, nearby water sources and contaminated soil.

It said the precautionary measure was necessary to prevent possible exposure to hazardous materials while laboratory tests are being conducted.

NESREA assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations progress and appropriate environmental safety measures are implemented.
