Ukrainian Drones Kill Five in Russia’s Rostov-on-Don, Taganrog Also Targeted

At least five people, including a child, were killed in an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, while the nearby port city of Taganrog was also targeted, according to regional governor Yuri Slyusar. The attack is among the deadliest drone strikes reported in southern Russia in recent months and marks another escalation in the long-running conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.

Russian authorities said swarms of Ukrainian drones struck multiple locations across the Rostov region, damaging apartment buildings, warehouses and a shelter for homeless people. Emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish fires, rescue trapped residents and search damaged buildings. Several people were also injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Governor Slyusar said Russian air defence systems intercepted around 50 drones over the Rostov region, but some managed to penetrate the defences and hit civilian infrastructure. Besides Rostov-on-Don, drones were reported over Taganrog and several other districts, including Chertkovsky, Tarasovsky, Sholokhovsky and Millerovsky.

The attack also disrupted transportation and emergency services as officials temporarily restricted access to affected areas while bomb disposal teams searched for unexploded debris. Images released by Russian authorities showed burned-out buildings, shattered windows and scorched vehicles, highlighting the scale of the destruction caused by the strikes.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian media reported that the overnight operation targeted strategic military and logistics facilities in the Rostov region, including infrastructure linked to Russia’s military operations and export networks. Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment publicly on the reported civilian casualties, in keeping with Kyiv’s usual policy regarding cross-border drone operations.

The latest strike comes as Ukraine has intensified long-range drone attacks deep inside Russian territory, targeting oil depots, military airfields, logistics hubs and industrial facilities. Kyiv argues that such attacks are aimed at weakening Russia’s military capabilities and disrupting supply lines supporting its invasion of Ukraine. Russia, meanwhile, accuses Ukraine of deliberately attacking civilian areas, an allegation Kyiv rejects.

The overnight assault was followed by fresh Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory, underscoring the continuing cycle of retaliation between the two countries. Both sides have increasingly relied on drones to conduct long-range attacks as the conflict evolves, with aerial warfare becoming a defining feature of the war.

Military analysts say the latest incident illustrates the growing reach of Ukrainian drone capabilities and the mounting challenges facing Russian air defences. It also raises renewed concerns about the impact of cross-border attacks on civilians as the war enters another phase of intensified aerial operations.
