According to BBC Sport, FIFA has officially escalated its disciplinary action against Argentina following the ugly scenes that marred the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. What began on July 20 as a post-match investigation has now progressed into *formal disciplinary proceedings* against the Argentine Football Association (AFA), several Argentine players, and a member of the coaching staff.

On July 20, FIFA announced it had opened an investigation into the post-match violence following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina. At that stage, FIFA appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to gather evidence, review video footage, interview witnesses, and determine whether there were grounds for disciplinary action. The investigation centered on the mass confrontation after the final whistle, allegations of assault involving Argentine players and staff, and other incidents that tarnished football’s biggest stage.

Today (July 29), FIFA officially escalated the case by opening formal disciplinary proceedings.

After reviewing the evidence collected during that investigation, FIFA has now opened formal disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA), several Argentine players, and a member of the coaching staff. This means FIFA believes there is sufficient evidence to move beyond fact-finding and begin the formal disciplinary process under its Disciplinary Code.

Among those facing proceedings are:

* Leandro Paredes – alleged assault (three counts).

* Nahuel Molina – alleged assault (two counts).

* Roberto Ayala – alleged assault.

* Thiago Almada – alleged unsporting conduct.

* Spain’s Gavi – alleged unsporting conduct.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is also facing proceedings over several alleged violations, including:

* Political messaging through the display of the  banner.

* Alleged discriminatory chants.

* Security and organizational failures.

* Late kick-offs.

* Throwing of objects.

* Other disciplinary breaches during the tournament.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This is no longer merely an investigation.

An investigation seeks answers.

Formal disciplinary proceedings mean FIFA believes there is sufficient evidence to require those charged to answer allegations under its disciplinary rules.

This is a significant escalation and demonstrates that FIFA considers the matter serious enough to proceed with its judicial process.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The disciplinary proceedings are not the final verdict.

The AFA, the players, and the officials involved will now have the opportunity to present their defense before FIFA’s disciplinary bodies reach a decision.

Possible sanctions could include:

* Suspensions.

* Match bans.

* Financial fines.

* Disciplinary sanctions against the AFA.

* Other penalties permitted under the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

EDITOR’S NOTE

The progression from investigation to formal disciplinary proceedings is an important distinction.

On July 20, FIFA was asking:

What happened?”

On July 29, FIFA is effectively saying:

Based on the evidence gathered, FIFA believes there is sufficient basis to proceed with formal disciplinary proceedings.

That does not mean anyone has been found guilty. It does mean FIFA believes the allegations are serious enough to warrant a formal hearing and adjudication before its disciplinary bodies.

As football’s world governing body, FIFA now faces the responsibility of ensuring that its disciplinary process is thorough, impartial, transparent, and consistent. Whatever the final outcome, the decision will send an important message about sportsmanship, player conduct, accountability, and respect for the game on football’s biggest stage.

According to BBC Sport, what started as an investigation on July 20 has now escalated into formal disciplinary proceedings an important legal milestone in FIFA’s judicial process. The football world will now await FIFA’s final rulings, which could include suspensions, fines, or other disciplinary sanctions against those found to have violated the game’s rules.
