Kano Court Sentences Woman to Death for Killing Husband Nine Days After Wedding

A High Court in Kano State has sentenced a woman, Saudat Jibril, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of murdering her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their marriage.

The judgment was delivered by Maryam Sabo following the conclusion of the trial, during which both the prosecution and defence presented evidence before the court.

The incident occurred in May 2025 in Farawa community, located in Kumbotso Local Government Area, where the couple had lived together for only nine days after their wedding before Idris was killed.

The prosecution, led by Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, counsel to the Kano State Government, called three witnesses in support of its case.

The defence, represented by Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, presented Jibril as its sole witness.

In her judgment, Justice Sabo held that the prosecution had proved the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt. The court accepted the prosecution’s evidence and rejected the defendant’s testimony.

“The court finds the defendant guilty as charged and hereby sentences her to death by hanging,” the judge ruled.

Following the judgment, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service escorted the convict from the courtroom to begin serving her sentence, pending the outcome of any appeal she may file against the conviction.

Under Nigerian law, a death sentence imposed by a High Court is subject to the appellate process before it can be carried out.
