Adeleke Raises Alarm Over Police Arrest Order for Accord Party Leaders, Calls for Senator’s Arrest Over ‘Kill Threat’

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has raised the alarm over a reported police signal directing the immediate arrest of Accord Party leaders in the state, describing the move as illegal and a threat to democracy.

In a statement during an emergency press briefing on Tuesday, Governor Ademola Adeleke said he has credible reports that the signal orders the arrest of Accord Party leaders and their transfer to Abuja, with instructions that they should not be released until Monday.

Adeleke said he has spoken to the Inspector General of Police about the directive, but appealed that the development, if true, presents Nigeria as a lawless country.

Adeleke warned that arresting Accord Party leaders on the eve of an election amounts to the police helping the APC to rig the election.

He tasked the IGP to issue a statement assuring Nigerians that no such order has been given, adding that it is illegal and a threat to democracy for Accord Party leaders to be arrested on trumped up charges.

The Governor also expressed concern that over 62 Accord Party leaders are still held in illegal police detention without any charges against them.

Adeleke said this is not democracy and demanded immediate action to stop the illegal operations of the Intelligence Response Team, which he said has been arresting Accord Party leaders across local governments for no just reason.

On the second issue, Adeleke drew attention to a viral video of Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who he said called for the killing of Accord Party leaders and their families.

The Governor quoted the Senator as threatening that where they cannot get Accord Party leaders, they should kill their wives and children.

Adeleke described this as beyond politics and now a national security threat requiring the attention of Mr President through the office of the National Security Adviser.

Adeleke said he has raised the issue with the IGP and demanded the immediate investigation and arrest of Senator Fadahunsi.

He confirmed that the IGP has acknowledged the video and assured of immediate action.

The Governor also demanded that the police and DSS immediately arrest Senator Fadahunsi for incitement to genocide against the people of Ijeshaland and Osun State, to prove that Nigeria is a state governed by the rule of law.

Adeleke further demanded that the IGP enforce due process and fair policing by aborting all anti-people plots against democracy in Osun State.

He finally requested that the police and other security agencies act in line with the rule of law and their oath of office before, during and after the coming elections.

The Governor concluded by urging the IGP to stop the illegal operations of the IRT and ensure that all security agencies uphold democratic principles.
