The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Nigerians to vote massively for the proposed Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ticket in the January 16, 2027 presidential election, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of plunging the country deeper into debt through repeated foreign loan requests.

The party said the growing debt burden and the financial obligations being transferred to future generations made the 2027 general election a critical opportunity for Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible management of public resources.

The NDC’s appeal followed Tinubu’s request to the National Assembly for approval of a fresh external borrowing plan of $7.7 billion, estimated at approximately ₦10.79 trillion, to finance the 2026 budget deficit.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Spokesperson of the NDC National Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, described the recurring borrowing requests as evidence of what she called an unsustainable debt accumulation pattern.

Ikokwu urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the November 4, 2026 elections in the United States, arguing that citizens should use their voting power to influence political leadership rather than surrender to economic hardship.

She noted that Americans facing rising living costs and economic difficulties had demonstrated the importance of democratic participation by turning out to exercise their electoral rights.

According to her, Nigerians should similarly mobilise in large numbers to vote for Obi and Kwankwaso as a means of changing the country’s political and economic direction.

“Truly, it seems that right now, we cannot stop President Tinubu from his One Week! New Loan! One Week! New Loan! borrowing spree, which is already hitting the roof, because, regrettably, he has pocketed the National Assembly,” she said.

The NDC spokesperson also criticised the National Assembly, accusing lawmakers of failing to provide adequate scrutiny of the Federal Government’s borrowing requests.

She alleged that the legislature had become a rubber stamp for the executive, claiming that loan proposals appeared to receive political endorsement even before formally reaching the National Assembly.

However, Ikokwu maintained that Nigerians still had the power to influence the country’s future through the ballot.

“But Nigerians should not despair. The ballot remains our most powerful instrument of change. We appeal to citizens to use their votes to rescue the country from this debt trap and entrust its future to a government committed to transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources,” she added.

The party further warned against what it described as the mortgaging of Nigeria’s economic future through unsustainable borrowing and poor management of public resources.

It called on voters to participate actively in the 2027 elections, insisting that leadership accountability and fiscal discipline should be central considerations in determining the country’s next government.
