10 Police Officers Killed in Gun Battle With Bandits in Kebbi, 17 Suspects Neutralised

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 10 police officers during an encounter with suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The incident occurred around 9:25 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, along the Rafin Makuku axis, where police operatives intercepted a heavily armed group reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

According to the police, a fierce gun battle followed the interception.

At least 17 suspected bandits were neutralised, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed during the operation.

However, the security operation came at a heavy cost, with 10 police personnel killed in the line of duty.

Two other officers were wounded and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The police also confirmed that two civilians were killed during the confrontation.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, describing the fallen personnel as officers who paid the ultimate price while protecting Nigerians.

Disu extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased officers and assured them that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to honour their sacrifice.

The IGP also pledged continued support for the bereaved families and the injured personnel.

The remains of the fallen officers have been transported to Birnin Kebbi, according to the police.

Authorities said the area has since been brought under control, while additional security personnel have been deployed to reinforce operations.

The police said the deployment was aimed at preventing further attacks and pursuing members of the criminal group who fled the scene.

The Force said operations would continue until the fleeing suspects are apprehended and brought to justice.

The encounter highlights the continuing security challenges facing communities in northwestern Nigeria, where bandit groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and other violent crimes.

The police said it remains committed to working with other security agencies to disrupt criminal networks and protect residents across affected areas.
