Patrick Vieira Appointed New Senegal Head Coach, Agreement Confirmed
Former France international Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal national team, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the successor to Pape Thiaw.
The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, August 18, with Vieira signing an agreement to take charge of the Teranga Lions and begin work on the national team’s next phase. Reports say he assumes the role with immediate effect.
Vieira’s appointment marks a return to his country of birth. The former Arsenal captain was born in Dakar before moving to France as a child and went on to enjoy an illustrious playing career with clubs including Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City.
He also became a key figure in France’s golden generation, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000.
The new Senegal coach moves into the national-team job with considerable managerial experience. He has previously coached New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, giving him experience across different leagues and footballing environments.
Vieira emerged as the leading candidate for the Senegal job after the departure of Pape Thiaw following the country’s 2026 World Cup campaign. Earlier reports had indicated that the Senegalese Football Federation was considering Vieira among several candidates before negotiations progressed.
Reports from Senegal had previously indicated that Vieira was expected to sign a four-year contract, with ambitious targets for the national team, including a strong run at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and qualification for the 2030 World Cup.
His immediate task will be to establish his coaching structure, assess the squad and prepare the Lions of Teranga for their upcoming competitive commitments.
Vieira takes over a Senegal side regarded as one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations, with players such as Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly and Idrissa Gueye forming part of a generation that has enjoyed considerable success at international level.
The appointment also gives Vieira an opportunity to begin his first major assignment in international management after a club coaching career spanning Europe and the United States.
With the agreement now reportedly signed, attention will turn to Vieira’s first squad selection and the tactical direction he intends to bring to Senegal as the team begins a new chapter.
