Barcelona have completed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Rodri in a deal worth an initial €60 million, with additional performance-related payments taking the potential value of the transfer higher.

The Spanish champions confirmed the arrival of the 30-year-old midfielder on Tuesday after he completed his medical and finalised the move from Manchester City.

Barcelona have reportedly agreed a four-year contract with Rodri, keeping him at the Camp Nou until June 2030. He is expected to wear the No. 16 shirt.

The agreement brings an end to Rodri’s seven-year spell at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the world’s leading defensive midfielders.

Rodri joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and went on to make 298 appearances for the club, winning 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. He also scored the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter Milan.

His time in England also saw him claim the 2024 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Manchester City player to win the prestigious individual award.

Rodri’s return to Spain represents a major statement of intent from Barcelona, who have been looking to strengthen their midfield with an experienced player capable of controlling games and providing defensive protection.

The midfielder had one year remaining on his Manchester City contract, a factor that contributed to the English club eventually agreeing to his departure. Reports had previously indicated that City rejected several lower offers before negotiations produced an agreement.

Barcelona’s final package has been reported differently by various outlets. While some reports put the agreement at around €76.5 million in total, Spanish newspaper El País reports an initial €60 million fee plus €11 million in variables.

Rodri arrives at Barcelona with a wealth of international experience and is expected to play a key role in the club’s pursuit of domestic and European honours.

For Manchester City, his departure represents the loss of a player who was central to the club’s most successful period. The club has already begun rebuilding its midfield, with Elliot Anderson among the players brought in during the summer.

Rodri has previously expressed his excitement about returning to Spain, and his move to Barcelona now marks the beginning of a new chapter in a career that has already produced league titles, a Champions League triumph and the Ballon d’Or.
